Coil - Song Of The Week

VBR ZIP
Here is a list of the songs. All/most of the songs missing here have been released officially.
"01 SPOILER - LP VERSION [Force & Form FFK 1]
1984, SCATOLOGY original LP version, the CD contains an unreleased alternative version.
02 THE WHEEL - VOCAL [Some Bizarre EJ 26 06631]
1985, originally from the compilation, IF YOU CAN'T PLEASE YOURSELF YOU CAN'T PLEASE YOUR SOUL, but was later issued in instrumental versions on GOLD IS THE METAL and the accompanying 7" single.
03 THE ANAL STAIRCASE - A DIONYSIAN REMIX [Force & Form ROTA 121]
1986, originally from the 12" single of the same name, different from the version on Horse Rotorvator.
04 THE ANAL STAIRCASE - RELENTLESS MIX [1990 TOTAL 1 CD]
1986, originally from the compilation, Total Volume 1, different from the version on Horse Rotorvator.
05 KEELHAULER - 7" VERSION [1990 Threshold House/Normal Records]
1987, released as the b-side to The Wheel 7" single that came included with Gold is the Metal. Some 7" singles of these turned up in the bottom of a closet and were sold on the net. Many people bitched and this probably will never be done in a similar way again.
06 IS SUICIDE A SOLUTION? [1993 Clawfist XPIG 22]
1993, paired on a 7" single with Airborne Bells. The difference between this song and "Who'll Fall" from Stolen and Contaminated Songs is that this version has a short tag at the beginning and the end of the track as well as it is a slightly different mix. All apologies for the clicks and pops as this was encoded from a record.
07 pHILM #1 (vox) [1995 ESKATON 003]
1994, released on 10" single, this version is slightly different from the version on the Protection CD ep.
08 STATIC ELECTRICIAN [1995 ESKATON 003]
1994, first song on the b-side of the pHILM #1 10" single. This song appeared in the movie, Frisk.
09 RED SCRATCH [1995 ESKATON 003]
1994, second song on the b-side of the pHILM #1 10" single. On the record, it runs out into a locked groove. On this version, we have let the locked groove sit for a few cycles before stopping the song.
10 BLUE (ALTERNATE VERSION)
Here is a special version of the themes from Blue. The first few seconds are taken from the intro to "Blue Theme 1" available on the 7" release ofBlue but not on Unnatural History 2, the rest is the music from Blue Theme 2 (available on both) PLUS the dialogue from the movie, "Blue" by Derek Jarman. The soundtrack is out of print currently in the USA.
11 THEME FROM "THE GAY MAN'S GUIDE TO SAFER SEX"
This track has never appeared on a Coil release whatsoever. Some people have said this sounds like an alternate version of "Protection" but there are really no indications in the song anywhere. The sound quality is not all that great, it was dubbed off of a video cassette whose sound quality was not that great to begin with. Perhaps later we can get a better recording, but for now you can at least hear the song.
12 IF IT WASN'T WOLVES, THEN WHAT WAS IT? [1996 Auf Abwegen AATP02]
This song is from the compilation "Treat the Gods as If They Exist" which is still readily available from Auf Abwegen out of Germany. The title in its correct form appears as above, there was a slight typo on the CD of this release.
13 GNOMIC VERSES [1998 Sentrax/Invisible INV 7001]
This is a track credited to ELpH, from the Sentrax/Invisible compilation "Interiors".
14 NASA-ARAB (AURAL CIRCUMCISION) [1995 Restless 72790]
This isn't a Coil release, but if you listen closely, the song appears to be constructed completely of Nasa-Arab samples. The song is the "Aural Circumcision remix" of 'No Skin' from the Golden Palominos by Terry Themlitz. When this song was presented to Coil (by a fan), their reaction was discomfort, not because it was unauthorized samples, but because they didn't particularly feel Thaemlitz really did much to the song or samples at all. Since this is neither a Coil product nor is it widely unavailable, the song is in a streaming Real Audio format. We don't want to get in trouble here... (Hope you understnad.)
15 BEE HAS THE PHOTOS
This track has never appeared on a Coil release whatsoever. The song was recorded with Tim Simenon (of Bomb the Bass) and is featured in the movie 'Frisk'. This song has alsobeen referred to under other titles such as 'Simenon,''Damage from a Diamond,' and 'Backwards.' Allegedly it has been modified and reworked and will appear on the anticipated Nothing release of "Backwards" bearing the title of 'At Your Own Risk'.
16 EGYPTIAN BASSES
This track has never appeared on a Coil release whatsoever. This song has been circulating in a previous form on some bootleg tapes as an Untitled second track. This version here is the full version. There are no plans to release this track as of yet.
17 PRE-ORIGINAL CHAOSTROPHY
This song has shown up in the completed form on Love's Secret Domain and in partial on Stolen and Contaminated Songs. This version here has been floating around on those Love's Secret Domain demos. Here it is in the full original stunning glory.
18 THE DARK AGE OF LOVE
Not on Love's Secret Domain nor Stolen and Contaminated Songs. Sung by Marc Almond, this would have been the title track of that album they alluded to nearly a decade ago...
19 SPASTICHE
Here is another song of the week for you! It dates from about 1993 we think, from the first sessions on the project that was to become the yet unreleased "Backwards" (though it won't be part of that now). It allegedly features Ben Neill on trumpet who plays with Lamonte Young (but I don't recall any trumpets in this version).
20 ASSASSINS OF HAKIM BEY
This is another version of the track that appeared on Bill Laswell's 'City of Light' disc. It features the music from Stoned Circular from A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room. It is unknown who the speaker is on this track, but it is most certainly not Lori Carson.
21 PROTECTION II
This is another version of the track that appeared on the Protection EP. This version is the one that was used in the "Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex" instructional video. This version seems to go on forever. 13:24 total, it's roughly twice as long as the version originally released on the EP.
22 RUSH (BLACK SUN REMIX)
Well, this almost made it out. You see, Depeche Mode was going to release Rush as a single, but it ended up only as an additional track on the "Condemnation" single. Coil did a remix for Rush which was rejected. Rumor had circulated that this version materialized on a white label bootleg 12" single but nothing has been confirmed on that.
23 RED SKELETONS 2
This is an outtake from the Black Light District album, "A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room." We could be wrong on the title...
24 JOURNEY TO AVEBURY
John says, "The Avebury piece was composed by me, Sleazy and Drew. Can't remember when but 4 years ago at least. We did it at Slut's Hole in London. We were asked by James MacKay, who was a close friend and a producer of Derek Jarman, to write a new score for the Super 8 film, "A Journey to Avebury," which was originally 8 minutes long. The night I saw the film on video I met Derek in a dream and asked if we could slow it down to half speed. "Of course," he
said. So we did. It's 16 minutes now. Our re-done soundtrack version was debuted at a multi-media arts festival in Brighton. It will be released with another long monolithic piece very soon on CD and vinyl. On Eskaton? Maybe. It's mostly improvised by Drew and myself with Peter and I adding and treating it afterwards. The 'strange birds' are skylarks which nest on the ground and then hover high above the stones singing. Very English, very Vaughn Williams. Who provided the original sountrack "A Lark Ascending". Avebury is nearly where Julian Cope lives. It is a sacred earth / sky site. I have been making a new Super 8 film with Jordi Devas about Avebury for the last 6 years. Recording each mood and season and looking for mystic signs and interactions. Work still in completion. Due end of this era!"
25 ACID JAM PART 3
Part three of a five part "jam session". At the request of the artist, not all parts will be featured on Song of the Week. Sorry. Here's the story anyhow: it was a late night at Slut's Hole with John, Drew and Danny playing around with the equipment. The whole thing is 60 minutes in length. Perhaps this will one day be attacked and edited & shortened but it also might end up as a CD on its own... But for now it remains somewhat untouched.
26 ACID JAM PART 2
Same as above"
